Help!!!! Bugs killed me

So went dry camping with my two boys and father in law this last weekend up in Laguna mountain off kitchen creek rd. It was awesome up there besides the bugs eating and driving us crazy. Does anyone have a good bug repellant or home made repellant that works well with giant horse flies? Really would like to go back up there but the overwhelming bugs makes me hesitant to go back too soon haha. Suggestions are greatly appreciated

Skin So Soft I heard works well.

Never believed it until I tried it in Hawaii one year. Buy the oil in the spray bottle. Easier to apply and carry.

Mix results in my experience with Skin So Soft. I had to apply a ton to get any noticable effect.

Bottom line: Deet works. Its nasty, smelly, and you know you put the stuff on when you use it, but the more Deet in the mix the better it works. Back Woods Off has a fairly high concentration of Deet, but if you are going to go the Deet route, might as well go big - Jungle Juice (100%). Im not even sure you can get it in California anymore, as it is one of those nasty chemicals that the State just doesn't like.

That said, it works mostly on Mosquitos and not sure how it works the flies.

Get 100% DEET repellent. It does work, it stinks too but it is better than being eaten alive.

It is considered by most to be the best next gen type Repellant due to its efficacy and also ancillary attributes like it doesn't dissolve nylon like DEET does. It was recently recommended and approved by the military for these reasons. Natrapel is a brand at REI and other places that has the max strength of 20%. Sold out many places due to Zika

I used a bug-o-bucket for about 15 years of camping. It is a citronella candle in a small galvanized bucket. It worked pretty good. If the mosquitoes got to bad we would hose down with off.

I now have a spray called Repel in my pack. It is 40% DEET and works good. I have a new bug-o-bucket but haven't had to use it yet.
