    Summer road trip/camping 2016 Suggestions

As the title states, my girlfriend and I (potentially another couple as well) are trying to plan a camping trip and road trip this summer. Unfortunately we'll only have about a 7-10 because of work and other scheduling conflicts. We're thinking sometime late June/early July.

Now why I am posting a thread about it? I have no idea where to go!!!

We've done some weekend camping within an hour or two of us before. However, we're looking to go somewhere a bit farther and "off the grid" (I hate that term but I can't think of a better one the moment) and not use an actual campground "boon-docking"?. I'm looking to do a bit of off-roading/trail riding (I have a pretty simple, yet capable Jeep) and hiking. Right now I'm thinking about/interested in just about anywhere along Highway 395. I've done some basic research already and I'm considering Monoache Meadows, Round Valley, Long Valley, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, Lake Tahoe Area, somewhere with hot springs would be cool too etc. but I'm open to other suggestions. I've never been to these areas since my very early youth so it'll all essentially all be new to me. I'd like to stay South of Tahoe as any further would be a lot of driving (time). I'm in Southern California so the more South on the 395 the better I guess, but I'd be willing to drive for the right destination.

What I'm looking for are some places that:
(in no particular importance order besides the obvious)

    A) Are free to camp
    B) Won't be heavily populated
    C) Take some trails/off-roading to access
    D) Have none or few designated campsites
    E) Have lots of exploring to do around them
    F) Not terribly hot (no Death Valley, at least this time of year)
    G) Have beautiful scenery surrounding (rivers, lakes, meadows, hot springs etc.)
    H) Basic restrooms (definitely not a must but would be nice for the SO if possible)
    I)
    J) More to be added as I think more
    K)
    L)

    Any suggestions/tips/advice would be awesome!!
Once I pick a place I'll see what additional gear/supplies I'll need to get ahold of.

    Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks for the reply. I actually did the 101 road trip two summers ago. Took about 4-5 days. It was a great time! Looking for a bit different scenery.

Lobdell Lake in the Sweetwater Mountains it's back in there a ways off of 395. Lots of four wheeling or walking, shooting etc.

          Check out Ghost Town Bodie.

          Several Hotspring areas around Bridgport.

Monanche is nice. There are a lot of different places to camp. There are campsites though, but often not all that many people, depending on the time of year.

Monoache is on the top of my list right now. Is there no open camping? What about access?

I don't think that there is any open camping, but there are a lot of places to camp, so you have other campsites around you that are empty.

Access? What do you mean by access?

From the pictures I saw it was all open but I could be wrong. Access as in roads. What's the easiest or most fun way to get there and any other trails? Thanks

So there are sites with just flat ground and fire rings?

There is only one way in and out, which is past the Black Rock Ranger Station. You can only camp in designated areas. There are quite a few roads to drive around on in the area, old buildings to see. There is some private land up there too. There are trails you can hike as well.

Yes, there are sites with rock fire rings. There are several camping areas. At least 4 areas I think.
