Hiking in Azuza East fork River

I will be hiking though the Azuza forest which I understand is a "National Forest"

if i have my handgun in a holster with a cable lock going through the firearm is this a legal way to transport?

from what I understand I can keep my loaded gun in my tent. but I don't understand how i can leagally transport my gun to my tent after a few hours of hiking?

the alternative I guess would be in a locked case in my backpack? or could I have my back packed locked with my firearm in the backpack.

I have having a difficult time understanding the laws.

a cable lock going through the firearm
is never applicable to transporting a handgun.

Either the gun is unloaded and locked in a completely-enclosing case (hard or soft), or the place you are hiking must be a place where it is legal to shoot, and you can carry the gun loaded, openly or concealed.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Where you headed, Zerg? From the East Fork, I've been up to The Bridge. There's site that intrigues me just east of Iron Mountain, but the hike would be GRUELING. This spring I might do a one-way trip, from the north, that comes out the East Fork.
