I went to a party and went outside and shared a smoke with a guy and his girlfriend. He apparently works for a scope manufacturer, but his girlfriend, much to my surprise, was a knife expert. Apparently really into throwing knives, and she made me realize that I knew very little, actually, about knives. So I thought it would be good to make a glossary/chart of different terms, features, grades of steel for reference. As I said I am not the expert here, though I am reading up. I thought people could pool their knowledge a bit to fill out the list.
Types of Knives
Common Parts of a Fixed Blade Knife
Types of Fixed Blade Knives
Common Parts of a Folding Knife
Types of Folding Knives
Types of Locking Mechanism
Types of Blades (Points)
Grades of Metal used (usual characteristics)
Any other categories you might think of, or, alternatively, any websites that already have done this work would be great. Especially, e.g., if rather than just listing types of metals used and their alloy contents, if it gave an understanding of the relative advantages/disadvantages. A beginner might not know how carbon or vanadium affects the blade
