One of my beater knives I use everyday is an Esee 3 that started out with serrations (which I grinded off) and their black powder coat. After a while the scraped up coating was causing a bit of drag so I decided to strip it off.
Soaked in denatured alcohol for 10 mins then sanded with 100 grit paper and then rinsed with more alcohol. Soaked in some old red wine that i had laying around the office for about 15 minutes in a mason jar, taking it out a couple times in between to shake off and mix the wine around.
Overall, really happy with the results considering it was just a half-assed (quick) job at prep work and sanding. I think I have a couple Moraknivs somewhere that are carbon steel so I?ll do those as well, but with more prep work next time and finished with finer sandpaper. Not bad for a lunch break experiment!
