First try at forcing a patina

One of my beater knives I use everyday is an Esee 3 that started out with serrations (which I grinded off) and their black powder coat. After a while the scraped up coating was causing a bit of drag so I decided to strip it off.

Soaked in denatured alcohol for 10 mins then sanded with 100 grit paper and then rinsed with more alcohol. Soaked in some old red wine that i had laying around the office for about 15 minutes in a mason jar, taking it out a couple times in between to shake off and mix the wine around.

Overall, really happy with the results considering it was just a half-assed (quick) job at prep work and sanding. I think I have a couple Moraknivs somewhere that are carbon steel so I?ll do those as well, but with more prep work next time and finished with finer sandpaper. Not bad for a lunch break experiment!

That looks good. I did a couple forced patinas on my Mora Companion (stuck into an orange for a couple hours) and Companion HD (white vinegar). They both took really well to it.

I also have an ESEE 3HM and that thing rocks.
It was just an old plywood boat, with a '75 Johnson, with electric choke. A young boy, two hands on the wheel, I can't replace the way it made me feel.

Won?t Vinegar work just as well? Any mild acid should do the trick?

I like it. I use heated apple cider vinager. I've had blades come out with blued coloring as well as a T10 steel blade come out with color case hardened look.

do outside as the heated ACV will smell up your house something awful.

Yep! I just had an old bottle laying around that I wasn?t gonna drink so decided to try that out instead.
