My SOG with AUS 8 steel is rusty

How normal is it for AUS 8 steel to rust? This is a well used knife that has been rode hard and put away wet. This one has "China" on the blade if that matters.

AUS-8 has less chromium than many stainless steel alloys, but that makes it easier to sharpen. It's a good workable steel, clean it with cratex or emery cloth and carry on.

Looks to me you did not give her enough cuddle time and whisper sweet nothings.
I had a SS blade do surface rust recently. I was very surprised. Makes me question what type of metal it really may be.

I?m sure you could remove that easily with a little elbow grease and some cleaner

Virtually any steel, even 'stainless steel,' will rust over a period of time if not properly cared for. The terminology used isn't "rust proof." It's corrosion- or rust- resistant.

AUS 8 isn't an 'high end' stainless steel. It is often touted as 'mid-range' and then you're told it is 'comparable' to 440. In short, it's what many will acknowledge as a 'budget steel;' i.e., one that (sort of) does the job, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It is used, primarily, due to its comparative ease of sharpening rather than being high on the 'corrosion-resistance' chart.

In short, thinking AUS-8 will never rust is beyond pie-in-the-sky thinking similar to M-16's don't need a cleaning rod as ".22's" never need to be cleaned. It is an 'adequate' steel, but still requires attention to proper maintenance.

                Clean it and move on.

Putting it away wet is the problem. Unless the blade is titanium if left wet expect it to rust.

Remember its stainless not stain proof.
