    Anza knives

Hey fellas, I've got a 1/2 dozen + Anza knives made from 1983-2010. As we know they are made from files and rasps.

Long story short, the scales are glued on and I've had a couple pop off when they're dropped. I'm asking if anybody has tried drilling holes for the scales. I'm not sure what kind of heat treating they did at that end (all of them are full tang) I've got a drill press and bits, just not sure what and if.

    Thanks fellas

It's great you have the right tools to fix them but have you considered calling Anza knives, located in San diego, to see if they would offer any kind of factory repair?

I know they might just reglue them but glue technology has come a long way since 1983.

And thanks for the trip down memory lane, it seems like just yesterday I remember their distinctive look when they were featured in the what's new section of old school paper hunting, gun and knife magazines.

Contact Anza and ask for Charlie Davis the owner. He is a great guy that has been around a long time. Good luck.

The tangs are hardened just like the blades. If you are looking to add pins to one that has lost its scales you can drill it with your press if you use carbide masonry bits. They don't quite run true so you'll end up with a hole slightly larger than size but thats not a big deal in your project. Tape up the blade for safety and have the spine towards your holding hand when drilling. Better to get whacked than sliced. Use water as a cutting fluid. Just keep dunking the tang in a coffee can of water as ya go. Water works real well and helps to keep your bit and steel from overheating. The masonry bits are pretty cheap and ya'll kind of go through em. Get a few extra. Take your time and you'll get er done.

Ya bet. Make sure ya dunk often in water. Too much heat can affect the temper. I like to do something like this barehanded, no gloves. Too hot to hold onto is bad. Might also think on Loveless bolts. Pins unless peened, only provide lateral support to the scales. If this has happened to the same one multiple times I'd bet maybe the tang isn't flat. Don't heistate to ask if ya run into any difficulties.

Yup, Anza and Toor out in El Cajon. Buck was there too until they escaped SDG&E to Idaho.

Love Anza and have a badaxx pigslayer from them, picked up maybe 10 years ago when there were gun shows. Excuse my ignorance, what scales? I am in the process of polishing it to a mirror. Quite a long process. Any tips? I have gone from 220-2000 hand sanding. Wish there was a faster drill motor or dremal option. Will try to post pics if I can. Thanks!
