Read nothing but good things about this utilities knife. Should I get the ss companion version or the heavy duty carbon steel ?

I have a couple of the SS companion. Very happy with that knife. Processed a couple turkeys with it and is my go-to campsite knife. Good backpacking, hunting or fishing knife, lightweight and sharp, belt clip locks on solid. I think they run $20 - $30 range or so? Cant beat it for the price

I have two of the stainless ones - been great and have a nice edge to them.

Moras are excellent knives, I think hands down the best value you can get in a knife.

But I'll say it depends on how well you will care for it. I have a carbon mora (and several others) with the 6" blade and left it in a leather sheath for a couple months by mistake. When I came across it, it had a lot of surface rust and a tiny bit of pitting. It cleaned up well enough, but something to consider.

This was entirely my fault and I don't think any less of Moras, but if you can see yourself not taking the time to provide the little bit of extra care a carbon blade needs, get the stainless.

You can force a patina with vinegar and mustard for some rust protection on those carbon blades.

I have both. I prefer the stainless.

Let me clarify. The carbon steel requires immaculate maintenance. While that's easy to do in a kitchen, when you are out and about, it's quite hard to clean and dry well. The stainless steel is easier to maintain in less than nominal conditions. As a result, the blade advantages of the carbon are just not worth it to me. The moras are very cheap and quite handy. You can't go wrong. I have one in each travel pack.

Ok, for those having rust issues, just give it a good cleaning, get rid of the rust, then coat it in canola oil. Yes, they use a high carbon steel that will rust if you look at it too hard, but keep a light coating of oil on it and it will last. I have had mine for 25 years with only minor, easily addressed rust issues.

That and Opinel are probably the 2 best bargains in knives.

The issue with carbon rusting is a carbon knife in a plastic sheath,
oil a leather sheath for one and it won't be a problem.

That said I prefer the vintage carbon Puukko's....life is short.

I use 4" bladr Moras for hunting and fishing. The carbon blades will rust if you look at them sideways, but are way sharper than the stainless.

I suggest haunting ebay and Amazon for deals. I bought a dozen of them for $4/apiece last year. At that price, I can throw them away instead of sharpen them. Not that I do that, but still.....

Those are my favorite. The orange handle means if I am processing game I can set the knife down and not forget where I put it. Or if I am fishing and I drop it in the water, I can see where it went. Makes it hard to lose.
