My advise is to find an archery shop near you and get sized for a bow. This is one of those times when Amazon is your enemy. In my case I got a bow "kit" and some free range time and about 2 hours worth of time getting a bow sized for me that ended up being less than Amazon.

compound or recurve?

for compound bows, Bear, PSE, Diamond all make entry level bows with a very wide range of adjustment - making it easy to figure out what fits. Highly recommend finding a local show, rather than a big box that happens to have an archery section. A friend's father is a former army sharpshooter who picked up a job at Cabellas when he retired - they put him in charge of the archery section, much to his consternation. ".. I don't know crap about bows.."

The best option is to find a good shop, that offers lessons, and bow setup with the purchase. Not sure where you're at, but in the Bay Area, Predator's in Gilroy is highly recommended.

I got my girlfriend a LH PSE Stinger for under 200, but getting my preteen step-daughter set-up with a Bear Lite zeroed out my rifle budget that month. It's enlightening to realize the release aids can cost as much as the bare bow.

recurve-can't go wrong with a samick sage. it's the universal beginner bow. its got enough flexibility to play around with, can shoot off the shelf or off a stick on rest, plus it can mount sites. its takedown so it can be stored easily.

No compound yet, recursive. I guess I'm looking for the 22 of the bow world, approx how much is that samick bow. . .it's pretty which makes it an easier sell to my wife.

I think I paid like $185 out the door for a Samick Sage, arrows, stringer, glove, forearm pad, and some free range time. I went to Fat Shafts in Benicia.

I'd say to find a good local archery shop and go tell them that you're new, and want a low end bow set up for backyard plinking. If you buy online, it very likely won't be set up right for you, and you'll get frustrated when things don't work well.

A fully outfitted ready to shoot good enough quality bow can be had for 4-500 bucks.

I just bought a Hoyt Double XL as my "first" (in a while...haven't shot in 15 years, have an antique that sticks fish now and then) though, so what do I know.

My local shop's prices on the bow, release, arrows, sight, quiver and rest were within a few dollars of online prices anyway, and I'd rather support local AND have their service when I need it.
