I did a search for a comparison on the Benchmade Bugout versus the Spyderco Para 3 and could not find one. So which knife do you prefer? Primary use would be EDC and secondary use would be for hiking. Thanks for the help.

Benchmade Bugout or Spyderco Para 3

A friend of mine is looking to buy a small lightweight folder for hiking. The new Benchmade Bug Out has peaked his interest. I suggested he looked at the Spyderco Para 3 because I think the blade geometry will be more conducive to LW knife related tasks on the trail. I’ve never had a Benchmade...

Im new to the knife world and trying to get myself started on the right foot. I want to start with my EDC and these two seem to fit the bill. Just want to see what everyone recommends out of the two. Thank you guys for your inputs. I am leaning more towards the Bugout.Comment

My pick would be Benchmade grip or mini grip with deep carry clip.
It's a one and done lifetime knife.
You can get a mini grip in the 100 range, then if you feel like it get a deep carry clip and you'll have basically the same as the 165 gray/blue version, though I'd just buy that one.

Not coincidentally, the Para Military 2 is my EDC.Last edited by Mayor McRifle; 01-09-2019, 9:10 PM.Anchors Aweigh

I have a bunch of spydercos and benchmades. I like both brands. I looked at the bugout and thought it was over priced even by benchmade standards. My Wife gave me a bugout for my birthday this summer. I can't put it down. It is so light it is amazing. The blade is dead center and it opens and locks in place without a hitch. Of all of my folders the bugout is my favorite.Comment

I've always been a spyderco guy through and through. My favorite of the bunch was the Shabaria which had a weird handle design, but it was amazing. WONDERFUL blade shape that was used for many moons. I had the special edition with the carbon fiber handle and people on the blade forums FREAKED that I actually USED my knife. I won't own a knife for sheer collection value, everything must have a use.
Of the two you are looking at, I'd go Paramilitary II or even a Leek. The leek is one of the only assisted blades I actually like because of how slim it is.Comment

The Bugout is my personal EDC. Love the deep pocket carry clip and you get a lot of blade for under 2 ounces.

I don't have any experience with the PM series. However, I do own an Endura 4, two Delica 4s (one FFG VG-10; one saber ground ZDP-189), and a Dragonfly 2.
None of those knives have even come out of the drawer since I got my Benchmade Bugout a few months ago.
I know the PM series is pretty highly-regarded among Spyderco's lineup, and I can't comment on that. What I can tell you is the Bugout is the best EDC knife I've ever owned, bar none. Benchmade really hit it out of the park with this.Comment

+1 for the Paramilitary for a number of reasons
Less sweep on the blade tip, meaning that you do not lose cutting power as you approach the end of the blade
More acute point - if you use the knife as a defensive tool, the pointier the blade, the easier it penetrates. Combine it with the straighter edge and you have a tool that will easily create a "comma cut" as it is used in Martial blade concepts to disable an attacker's mobility.
Third: full flat grind results in a low resistance while cutting
Also, i believe the Para-military is narrower, which makes it easier to carry.
What I would recommend if you want to carry the knife as a defensive tool and if you have friends who own them, do a cutting test (run a search for "porkman" on youtube), compare and base your decision on the results
Best way to quantify what a knife is capable of.
This helped me root out blades that are not up to parUpcoming Classes:

I have both.
Both a good knives. Bugout is really light and thin in pocket.
Both have same steel.
Deciding factor should be.
