Ceramic Blades

Anyone here have any experience with a ceramic knife? I'm thinking about getting a Boker with a ceramic blade. The reviews are kind of all over the place. Some say it's way too fragile, some say it works great. Any experience with this at all guys?

They work great.
They are fragile.
Do not use them to cut your steak on a ceramic or Corelle plate... the plate will split like you scored it with a glass cutter.

theyre really sharp, but they can chip easy. I chipped mine a tiny bit by cutting a nylon zip tie. They have to be shipped in to get resharpened, unless you have a diamond lansky set or something

Use it to cut only and you ought to be fine

Ceramic has virtually no lateral strength. Using it to pry anything at all and you are likely to damage(break) the blade. There might be a few situations or applications where ceramics make for a good blade, but I prefer steel.

As previously mentioned, ceramic blades can be super-duper sharp because ceramics can be extremely hard, almost as hard as diamonds. However, as a consequence to being hard, it can also be very brittle.

If the knife isn't for heavy-use, you'll probably be fine, but don't expect it to stand up long to much abuse.

I have only read about sharpening ceramic blades, but it also appears to be a bit of a chore. Apparently, because the ceramic is so hard, only a diamond stone will really work. While diamond stones aren't especially expensive, they are more costly than traditional composite or natural stones.

Ya, DMT plates are very nice, but the coarse grit hones are around $50, the finer grit are around $80. I have a 320 for lapping my natural stones, and the 600 for setting the bevel on my straight razors. From there I go to a Belgian Coticule.

I got the knife that I was thinking about getting. It has ceramic blade and carbon fiber handles. It's made by Schrade. I got it pretty cheap on eBay, but it's Bill pretty well and it's really light. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody for a light everyday carry. It's more of a gentleman's knife.

I have a broker folder and I like it much except it chips easily.

I found a ceramic kitchen knife in my drawer at home and started using it... for everything now. I forgot where I got it but I use it for everything now and it works great!
