Yup. Kershaw makes solid blades. I have good blades from Gerber and Buck as well.

This is my edc. I have been carrying it for 3 years now and only have to sharpen it maybe every 8 months or so. I use it daily. It's a great knife, although a little over your budget. This one also comes with a carbide sharpener.

that's what i carry, i got the made in usa version. i haven't sharped it at all and its edge is still good. I use it all the time and hasn't failed me.

I did buy the same knife from Kershawguy but it was made in china, felt the same but i got it as a gift for a friend. not sure if it held up since he doesn't EDC, its been a few years.

You can typically get a spyderco Paramilitary 2 in the 100 dollar range on amazon.

If you manage to get it at that 100 dollar mark its hands down on the best knives for the money.

I have a couple kershaws with speedsafe. The torsion bar on my Knockout ended up breaking and needing replacement. Emailed Kershaw and had a replacement bar by the end of the week.

Spyders are good. I'm a little more partial to Benchmade, just a grip thing.

If it doesn't feel 'right' brand is irrelevant.

If you want that solid feel and want a quality knife I think a Spyderco Delica4 in Stainless steel scales would fit the bill perfectly. You cannot go wrong with this knife. On top of that the SS version is $30 under budget.


It can be had in full plain edge, full serrated, or combo.

The only reason I recommend the SS version is because you mentioned a solid feel. Now I just assume you mean metal scales, but I could be wrong. If not I highly recommend the Delica 4 with other scales. There is a wide selection of scale colors, blade shapes, edge selections, blade finishes in the Delica 4. My favorites would be these two. These both have FRN scales which you might not like if you do not want a light weight knife.

The tenacious is worth a look and well under budget. You could get him one of these and a nice Swiss army knife and give him both. It has G-10 scales.
