    Sawback machete illegal?

I am guessing a sawback machete like a Shrade with rubber handles is simply illegal in CA or AT LEAST open for interpretation by a LEO? It is sharp on both sides. I don't own one, but I just saw them on sale for $16 (On Internets not in a CA brick and mortar).

I think I'm picking up a $10 UST manual chain saw in a pouch, hopefully there's no problems with those.

Nothing in State law that addresses such a thing.

So a sawback would be fine as long as it was on the outside of a pack - not concealed.

They sell them at Major Surplus.

(Not saying if I bought one or not!)

Can you cite any law that would make it illegal? Do you have any other sources which even hint at it being illegal?

I feel silly now, having avoided daggers forever - but I am glad I asked. Thanks guys.

Probably will have the pocket chain saw and something with a sawback.

I think someone told me that years ago and I have seen the "dirks and daggers" phrase over and over through the years, mixed with people from Texas talking similar restrictions. I was going to order a sawback because they were a good deal and had a moment of doubt, and asked.

As would any machete, sawback or not, I suppose.

I rather suspect his was just an application of "if it's cool or fun it must be illegal in California" - true often enough.

Think the issue is double-edged blade. Saw doesn't fit the definition of blade.
I also have a Gerber machete w/sawback. bought it somewhere in CA.

Get a Mauser and put one of the old Sawback Bayonets on it.

Never know you might have to trim a tree.

Sawback bayonets, that brings back a historical memory.

Propanganda during WW1 was absolutely over the top, shameless lies and exaggerations, making the Germans out to be monsters:

                        These posters are examples:

And one of the lies was about the sawback bayonet. I don't have a German photo, but the Allies were claiming that the teeth on German Sawback bayonets were there to make a bayonet wound worse. As if sticking a bayonet in someone was not bad enough, the saw teeth were supposed to inflict even a worse wound, all of which showing that Germans were nasty rotten people committing war atrocities whenever they could.

The fact that the British had sawback bayonets was not an issue. Sawback bayonets were rather common, as Pioneer Troops (Combat Engineers) were issued the things to saw wood. This is a Swiss sawback, M1914.

The upshot of it was, if you were a German, and you surrendered, Allied troops would automatically shoot you if carried a sawback bayonet.

I will bet that someone looked far enough back, some WW1 era California law declares sawback bayonets illegal because they are inhumane.
