Couple things.

I can probably help you with some stuff. I need to sell a handi rifle barrel, but I think no one will want the range box. So I will probably have a bunch of stuff I can sell (I can go cheap) out of that, up to and including the whole box.





I have some clean-shot you have for pennies on the dollar. Doesn't work in the handi as well as Castello's American Pioneer Powder, and can't ship. It'll work fine in a cap lock. It's not what you want, but it'll get you out shooting, let you test a powder even if a substitute, and you can compare to APP. Personally, I won't ever bother with pyrodex or 777.

Now, for black powder. Mail order wins the day. HOWEVER, if you are like me and demand to know local sources, you have two. Your CLOSEST source for BP heading north from the Bay Area is a shop in Ione. Your CLOSEST source for BP heading south from the Bay Area is Paso Robles. If you take trips to LA or Sacramento regularly, they are the places to stop on the way. ~25 a lb. Call to make sure they have what you want, they get stock often and sell out often.

If you are interested and local, you can also make stuff for your pistol. For example, rather than use a short starter then a rod, you can make a short starter with extra long ram made from solid brass. I've got all the tooling here. Wouldn't work well if you are in Vallejo, but if you are near San Jose, it's worth considering. Just add your favorite jag and you are GTG.

.490 round balls. Cast your own. Seriously. Once you find the right diameter, you are set. But I digress. In the meantime, local shops often have a box or two of balls and they are cheap compared to conicals. Smortsman's supply and Reeds at one point have had round balls. Call and ask if they have any 490's in stock. San Jose Gun Exchange may have a .490 mold.

I have a LEE 50 cal REAL mold if you wanna try some REALs. But I'm keeping the mold for now. Got it from SJGE for something like 10 bucks though, so it's worth asking Castello (in person, he hates the phone) or SJGE if they have a roundball mold for you.

Lubed patches: Make your own. Go to any fabric store and ask for pillow ticking. It should be .014 to .017" thick. Take your micrometer to check. Don't be shy when they ask what it is for, they are crafters. They are used to re-enactors coming in and chatting, so it's no big deal to meet someone who's actually putting balls down the barrel. You can do any of the following:

cut into long strips and cut the patch at the muzzle.
cut into squares and use as is.
cut into rounds and use, if you have the patience. I don't.

For lube, Crisco, rendered bacon fat, fat+beeswax, TC borebutter, and ballistol/water mix all work. You'll find what works best for you. Start by swabbing between shots and you'll get a sense of what keeps the powder fouling soft and not.

Easiest starter way to go is to cut a square or long strip to cut @ muzzle, and squeeze a few drops of moosemilk (the ballistol and water mix) right on the patch just before loading. Or buying pre-lubed patches with TC bore butter on them, whatever you like. I think Castello has some for a 50 cal.

You might find the combo too tight. You can find linen or other suitable .010" material at your local fabric store too. If you need it. I have to short start my rifle with a hammer. Seems tight, but at 50 yards I can shoot better than the guys with bolt rifles and AR-15's at the range. You'll find out what combo works after awhile.

paperclip is a fine way to start off with a nipple pick in a pinch if you cant find one and want to shoot while waiting for TOTW to ship to you.
