Check out seal beach animal shelter or OC humane society. Or adoptapet or petfinder. I just got one for my 2 boys off adoptapet. They even showed if they were good with kids or not.

I'd recommend that you really take some time and research breeds before you buy a family member for the next 10 years.

          May I recommend a Chihuahua.

Very little health complications throughout their lives. They live ~15 years. Very inexpensive to feed. Requires little exercise and easy to house train. LOYAL!

Perfect yapper for home alarm during the night.

They DO require LOTS of LOVE however!!

          Best of luck

go to a shelter. give those animals a chance. their only like $45. and make sure u can handle a dog, their not just a toy that u make a decoration in the backyard once u get tired of them. they become part of the family

I have a Yorkshire terrier. She's a great dog. Obedient, small, and smart. Barks like the dickens whenever someone comes to the door. No shedding, and I keep her hair short so it isn't a problem. Doesn't eat much, turds are the size of a thick index finger, exercise can consist of throwing a small toy down the hall for her to fetch...repeatedly.
              Sorry, not sorry.

as with everyone else. Please check out a shelter and do not buy from a breeder if at all possible.

SOO many dogs are euthanized every day and most of them just need a good home to be normal. No, i am not a crazy animal rights person, but ever since i volunteered at the pound one summer and saw a commercial size trash can full of animals. I'll never even think about buying from a breeders.

Chihuahua Mixes are great dogs. I rescued a chihuahua/rat terrier mix and once he is done teething he'll only be a little bit of an A Hole. haha

I agree on going to the shelter. Lots of good dogs there. I got lucky, rescued two Korean Jindos that are good with kids and even cats. It doesn't cost anything to look, and who knows, you might find the perfect dog and save its life in the bargain.

Do yourself a huge favor and do the research first.
Shelter/Rescue dogs have a lot of baggage and issues, not the best for a 9y/o.
Terriers have a lot of energy and need to burn it off or you'll go crazy.
Chihuahuas are the same and they never stop barking.

                      Yes! Please adopt!!!

We've rescued 3 dogs from the pound & 1 from a shelter over the past 10 years. We couldn't have asked for better dogs.

Forget puppies. Get a dog that's at least a year to 18 moths or older. They usually don't need to be house-broken & already know the basic commands like "sit", "stay" etc. They are THE most grateful dogs & they will let you know it through their loyalty & devotion to you & your family.

As someone else pointed out, do your research. Some people buy cute German Shepherd puppies that grow up to be 80 to 100 lb. dogs. When the dog gets too big for the apartment, the dog is tossed aside. It's a heart wrenching situation for the family & especially the dog!

If you're going to give a dog a home, make sure it's a "forever" home. You have an obligation to that dog for his/her entire life. No different than a child.

True about the terriers, but not all chihuahuas. Mine only barks when he hears people directly outside the house. He is just a puppy too. Great watch dog.

OP - I agree with do your research, but try your hardest to stay away from breeders. Just watch one of the ASPCA commercials. Ha

People have more baggage & issues than dogs. More often than not, a dog ends up in the pound or a shelter because the idiot owner left a gate open & the dog simply got out. When you adopt, you have the opportunity to play with the dog & check it's demeanor. A dog with issues will be obvious & the people at the pound have a really good feel for these sorts of things. Dogs that are out of the "puppy" stage are already who they're going to be. With a puppy, a lot of that won't be revealed until later. As with any dog, you just have to let them know who's boss from the very beginning & set boundaries.
