.40 cal S&W MP

I am looking to buy my first gun. I shoot this a couple of weeks ago and I think it will be a good first gun. I live in NorCal.

My question would be what do you want to get out of your first gun?
Personal protection? Target practice?
I own a 40 M&P and like it, however the 40 does have a sharp recoil and could be hard to control. It could be argued that for home defense other choices are better. My first gun was a revolver (357, for home defense) and I would suggest that to anyone.

I would also say go to Castro Valley Gun Shop in Castro Valley off of 580. Talk to the guys over there and they can take care of you. Let them know you are from Calguns and it's your first time buying a gun.
