    PPT in California

    Hi all.

I'm new to Calguns and am looking to buy an AR.

My question though is if I get it shipped to a dealer how does the PPT paperwork get done? My understanding is that both parties need to be present.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

It's not a PPT if both parties aren't present....which is the problem

If it gets shipped to the dealer a whole set of new rules apply. By fed law he needs to receive it and log it into his bound book. His fee for that can be whatever he wants $25-150 is common. You only pay $25 for the DROS. The $10 fee he gets for a PPT no longer applies. You also run into the sales tax rules. Some dealers charge tax on every transactions and some will not charge the tax if the seller is a private party and includes a note that it is an occasional sale between private parties.
Basic PPT rule is both parties must have CA ID and meet at the FFL.

Ah. So that means I pay the FFL fee then?

          You pay seller
Seller ships to ffl with a copy of their cdl, and normally contact info and a brief explanation of what's going on so ffl isn't in the dark when they receive it.

Include your contact info too so ffl can call you when it arrives

You go to ffl, start the paperwork
You need the safety card (take test + $25 normally if you don't have one)
          $25 for dros (usual rate)
And a dealer fee for the transfer for non in person ppt (example, Riflegear charges $60)
Fill out safe affidavit or buy a lock (price varies)

          Wait 10 days
          Pickup

I did a lower like that recently. It's a bummer so make sure you get a good deal on whatever you are buying
You'll probably be paying shipping fees to seller as well.

Your best bet is find a local seller to you or a drive that isn't crazy and you'll get rid of a lot of fees and maybe just have the $25 safety card, $25 dros and maybe a cable lock.
It would make the transaction a lot easier

Also make sure your cdl is current address (easiest) and get your safety card before you meet seller because the test takes 5-20 minutes depending on how fast/comfortable you are. It's about 30 questions.
