WTB Lyman "J" Type Shellholder #15

Well, here goes nothing....

Looking for a Lyman "J" type shellholder for .40S&W. According to the Lyman chart, it should be a #15.

I've done plenty of searches and this one appears harder to find than Winchester 231 powder!

Why not get an adapter so you can use button shellholders ??

The J is different from the X. Ask me how I know.

Was the .40 even around when they were using the J type?

There are J to X adapters that allow you to use X shellholders on your older Lyman press.

Good question, Jeremy. As I am starting to realize, I don't believe it was. I have the J to X adapter and I know it would be just as easy to use the X shellholders as John C points out. Trouble is, I wouldn't be able to use that nifty swing-out primer tube arm. Oh well, it was worth a shot.

What press are you using? There might be another solution to using the primer arm.

Depending on tolerances, you should be able to use a shellholder for a 9mm or .38 super. Try to find one of those.

Hey John,

I'm using a Lyman All American turret press. I have both 9mm & .38 J type shellholders and didn't even think to try them. I will tonight, thanks for the tip.

I think I might have a pre J type press, I know the J type does not fit. I called into Lyman and the got the oldest tech guy in the phone and he said something along the lines of "oh, you got one of them" and sorry we don't have an adapter for those.

I had bought a bag of mixed J type from a show and found they did not fit. And I did check, nothing that fit a .40 in the pile. Sorry.

Hey, thanks for looking brother. I'll make something work eventually. Funny thing is, I'll probably end up buying a prgessive press before I do, LOL.
