I hate to say it, but I'm almost certain it's a Chinese made reproduction (or possibly Filipino).

NONE of the Japanese blades show that kind of Damascus pattern- not the handmade nor the commercial WW2 blades.

The Japanese folded steel has so many layers the pattern is not visible like that. I'm betting her uncle bought it as a souvenir when on vacation.

Good news is, it looks like they made it right- the Damascus pattern suggests a hard core, and softer folded metal sides.
