I use a handgun.

Honestly the BEST weapon is one that you can and will use the best in such a situation. I'm not going to keep a loaded shotgun by my side at all times. But I can always keep my loaded handgun close-by. Plus nobody can surprise me and grab the barrel. Just not my thing.
