This J.P. Sauer & Sohn 1942 Mauser is mostly "in the white" (including the capture screws) and it has a lovely laminated stock and cupped buttplate. Partially matching serial numbers include the receiver, barrel, rear sight parts & stock. Most of the Waffenamts have been defaced or obliterated but it does not have the Russian X and it hasn't been dipped or shellacked.
UPDATE: I was just informed by Marcus Von W., one of CalGuns' preeminent experts, that this is a Romanian capture rifle with a Russian capture bolt. Here's what he said, "Some of these Romanian capture 98k rifles had straight handled bolts from VZ-24, Gew 98, or Polish rifles, others had straight handle bolts that had been bent down by the Romanians (the same ones that were also used on Romanian VZ-24 snipers, and some had the factory bent-down German or Polish Kar 98a bolts. Someone either tried (and failed) to make this rifle "more correct" by replacing the bolt with a regular 98k bolt, or if the bolt was a more valuable 98a or Romanian sniper bolt they switched it for a more common and less valuable RC 98k bolt. $400 is a very reasonable and fair price for this rifle - I sold several of mine for that much or more a couple years ago, when the prices of all C&R rifles were much lower." If you already have an FFL03 and you order a K98 from Wideners today it would be $399 plus shipping, you wouldn't get to see it in advance, and it might not arrive before the January 1, 2014 changes. I doubt you would do better ordering sight-unseen.
