Assessment: This is a Mauser model ES 340B, a .22 Long Rifle chambered target rifle produced around 1937-1939 in Germany by Mauser-Werke Oberndorf.
The ES 340B was the most basic of the "B" series target rifles and was popular with target shooters in Germany and England.
The rifle didn't see the same popularity in the United States where peep sights were preferred to open sights.
The Mauser ES 340B Mauser Rifle was also much more expensive than the Winchester Model 52 for example.
This rifle, without import marks, was likely either purchased by an American target shooter who also favored open sights prior to WW2 or was one of the many brought back by American military personnel after the WW2.
This example is in very good condition.
The rifle retains the great majority of its metal finish and has a great bore.
This will be a shooter for sure and should bring generations more enjoyment. Please see photos below.
