686's had a recall in the no dash guns. S&W modified them and sent them back to owners. If the gun has been modified, there should be an "M" stamped on the crane. Can not tell in your photos.

What was the recall for and thanks for the info?

        S&W 686 no dash

I beleive on some early 58x and 68x serial revolver cylinder binding when using HV .357 ammo. I have one and I thinks I called S&W and they asked me did I have issue with my 686. I told them none and they said keep using it and when there are issues call them and send it back. That was back in late 1982, my 686 is still good with no issue.

I carried the 686 in the early 80's as a CHP Officer. Everything was good when we were only allowed to carry the issued .38 +p+ ammo. They then approved the .357 125gr jacketed hollow points (great flame thrower round out of my 4" 686). Due to the hot .357 rounds, the primer would somethings crater and essentially cause the cylinder to lock up. I sent mine to S&W, got it back with a "M" stamped on it and never had anymore lockups.
