ABOUT THE GUN
The Ruger Security Six is a six-shot revolver in stainless steel. It has a 4-inch barrel and factory service grips in checkered walnut with silver Ruger medallions. The sights are adjustable for both windage and elevation. Weight is approximately 34 oz. I do have the factory box, but not the owner's manual. Box will be included with the gun.
I am the second owner. I purchased the Ruger through Shotgun News in approximately the late 1980's from J&G Sales out of Prescott, AZ. I believe the gun was a police trade-in. I enthusiastically fired various commercial ammo through it including about 100 to 200 125-grain hollow points in .357 magnum.
My wife, daughter, brother and I have all fired the Ruger loaded with the extremely powerful 125-grain hollow points. Our consensus was the Ruger was very manageable with hot defense rounds, but "snappy," meaning follow-up rounds had to wait while re-acquiring the target.
Because the Ruger's service grips are round, they distribute recoil forces equally across the hand. Also, because of the rounded design, it is very comfortable for folks with small hands to grip the Ruger without the edge of the grips burrowing into the palm. More recent revolvers have rubber grips, but these are over-sized and make it difficult for small-handed shooters to reach the trigger.
The gun has about 1000 rounds through it, mostly hand-loaded wadcutters I put together using 2.7 grains of Unique, which made for very soft target loads and fun to shoot. The grip checkering is somewhat uneven and not unlike other examples of Ruger factory checkering I have seen. The metal has some minor marks from use, but the piece's overall appearance is still very nice. The cylinder lock-up is tight and there is no erosion whatsoever of the top strap. Unlike Ruger's newer models, this Security Six contains no MIM parts polished up to look like forged steel or bar stock.
I have not fired the gun since the late 1990's. Since then, it has been a house defense weapon kept handy in case of trouble.
