It is a long pad. That piece is user adjustable / optional and totally removable. It's so that you don't accidentally / unintentionally switch the light on. And illuminate yourself i.e. give away the element of surprise or your position etc.

I'm surprised this is still here. For a home defense shotgun a light is vital, and that 9V puts out an enormous amount of light. Bump for a good deal and a great piece of kit.
