I got one can last week, it looked like any other can I have seem for sale. No rust and the ammo shot as good as the NC Tula..just got to clean it a little more
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

This is the ammo I got today from PSA. No rust at all.

I don't even need to open this. Some surface rust but the can sealed and intact. I am certain the ammo inside is fine.

Figures that it goes out of stock right when they offer free shipping. Shipping killed the deal for me on these.

The non water damaged ukranian comes
out to less than 180 with free shipping. Still a decent deal for 880 rounds, 21 cents a round. I have spent more for 9mm.

                  Yep. Steel core.
I dont know for sure about this particular ammo, but there is a common misconception about russian steel cased (often called bi-metal) ammo. People keep calling Tula and Wolf for example, "steel core" they are NOT steel CORE they are steel cases with steel JACKETED bullets with a a LEAD CORE - big difference.

The only commonly available ammo with a true " steel core" Im aware of is M855 5.56 ammo, can anyone who understands the distinction show me anything besides m855 that has a steel core????

I suspect that most all the milsurp 54R is also steel cased, steel jacketed projectiles- there is virtually no brass or copper in these types of ammo. This topic usually reverts to arguments about whether or not steel bullets damage barrels but since we're prolly' talking about disposable Mosins here, the point is moot...

Most mil-surp 7.62x54R has copper washed steel cases. The bullets on most of what we see for sale including this ammo from Palmetto State Armory, which appears to be Lugansk factory 60, is light ball mild steel core or LPS. This symbol ЛПС on the tin denotes this. http://62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmoID01.htm

Is there lead in a steel core russian bullet? What is the bullet jacket made of in a steel core bullet? I assume the only reason the commies/warsaw pact used steel was because its cheaper than brass and lead, or is there another reason?

                      Thanks for that informative link.

Yes there's lead in steel core Russian bullets. Most if not all of the Russian military surplus steel core ammo has a bi-metal jacket. It's exactly like you said. The reason they call it bi-metal is that the jacket is made of steel and covered with a plating or gilding as they refer to it of some other type of metal, usually copper. Most of the commercial steel case stuff we see has steel jacketed lead bullets that are coated with various things including copper. I'm not sure of all the reasons they used the steel core but cost was one. It's mild steel and not tungsten steel which is harder and if I remember correctly what is used in the SS109 bullets on M855 penetrator ammo. They're not concidered armor peircing but more like barrier defeating but they do do more damage to a target than lead only core bullets.

5.45x39 Russian 7N6 surplus for the AK74 is also steel core. Here's some cross sections of ammo. http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Ammo_Cross_Sections/ If you look near the bottom they have the 5.45x39 round and it gives you an idea of what the steel core looks like. I only looked through it briefly so I'm sure if they have the 7.62x54R in there but I've seen what one looks like pulled apart. The steel looks like a pellet cut off of a rod of steel stock encased in lead.

2nd can arrived, rust on side and bottom, i wire wheeled it off and come to find out, these cans have been re-painted at some time, had about 3 layers of paint or one primer and 2 coats of paint, so no idea how many times they have been painted an re-painted..... But still air-tight

The can I got looked a little better then this one. The ammo inside was all perfect. My Mosin loves it.
