Great price. Here's a history of this puppy - https://majorhykr.com/2018/06/21/a-s...urvival-knife/May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles
So we will know them by their limping.

Thoughts on how this stacks up functionality wise with the rat fixed blade

If you don't have either of those. I'd get the rat 3 for camping / bushcraft, comfy ergos. I'd get this one too cuz it's very cool and affordable. So, I guess..bothMay those that love us, love us.

FYI this one will come dull, with all the leather dry as a bone. You'll need to put an edge on it and treat all the leather before it is useable.Comment

I'd recommend the RAT-3. I have the serrated and non-serrated version and love both. Very well balanced, full tang throughout and the micarta grips give it a nice feel.
This video will give you a good overview of the 499: https://youtu.be/oHBnu4nP7p0iTrader Feedback Link: https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1884673Comment

It's not a bushcraft knife and comparing it to one is just dumb. First and foremost is cut your way out of an aluminum fuselage or plexi canopy or free yourself from chute cord entanglement after landing in some weeds or trees. Next is kill something, to either eat, escape, or steal a better weapon.
Shaving twigs into feather sticks so you can start a fire for your smores is low on the list of needs.
This knife is for someone who likes to collect G.I. type gear especially pilot knives
Here is more history on the knife

True.
I'll stick with my smore-knife over a glorified letter opener any day....iTrader Feedback Link: https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1884673Comment

Thanks to OP for the sale info, and to the follow up for more info.
I've always liked these. I have a stainless Camilus I bought as a teenager in 1980. I used to take it camping with me all the time. I gotta say, it didn't work well as a hammer. I tried pounding tent pegs into the ground with it. It just loosened it up so the guard rattles. About the time OC Walmarts were blowing out their ammo I picked up a couple Ontario versions on clearance for my son and I for $36 each.Comment

Ugh! I just logged on and bought one even though I don't need it. I have one somewhere buried in storage. Got that one over 30 years ago from the military clothing sales store on base. They used to be with the TA-50 gear at the MCSS. I think they were about $14 back then, which sounds cheap...but Private E-2's like I was at the time were only making $783 a month in base pay. So put in perspective, the deal the OP posted is an even better price than the $14 I paid back in the days when you take the current value of money into consideration.Comment

It's a classic piece of kit. I'm not sure if it's still issue in USAF survival gear or not. Army aviation is using the Ontario ASEK now, which is similar but more modern, it's possible USAF is using this as well. This is a decent knife to keep in your car or a bag of camping gear just in case you need something heavy and cheap to bang on something. But if I were getting another knife to actually carry and use while outdoors, I'd pick the Rat (or similar) any day.Comment

There are various ASEK still in use. I have the Gerber LMF II attached to my flight bag. It is also a modern issued ASEK, NSN 1095-01-552-5218
As far as knives with military history and pedigree go, you will never regret spending $38 on one.Comment

How could this knife be military issue if it’s made in the UAE?sigpic

Never trust Amazon to give you accurate information.
Ontario Knife Company has produced the following knives for many decades and all have seen combat with U.S. armed forces. Needless to say, these veteran blades are not in the business of giving quarter.
