I was worried about this. I was hoping it would be a walk in the park with common sense questions.

I hate to say it. But you can actually memorize the test. Even if you don't know about circuits, band assignments, etc. The Technician pool is around 424 questions. The actual exam is only 35 questions with roughly 3-4 questions per each section.
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is the national association for amateur radio, connecting hams around the U.S. with news, information and resources.

If you want a little more background on why, then I studied out of the Licence Manual back in the day.

Don't stress out studying. Just take it section by section until your comfortable enough to take the multiple choice test.
Section T1 Amateur Radio Service - 11 questions possible, only 3-4 will be picked
Section T2 Authorized Freqs - 12 questions possible, only 3-4 will be picked
      ...
      etc.

I went to a free 8-session course put on by my local ham group and paid $5 to test for tech and general.

                  HamStudy.org

I used this free website and knocked out each of three levels, one at a time, on the first attempt.

Each time I was sure I failed, but each time I easily passed.

Memorization was really the key for me.

I don't claim to be an electronics or radio wiz, but I have full privileges without ever buying a book or taking a class...

Prepare for your ham radio Technician class license with amateur radio flashcards, amateur radio practice tests, and explanations for ham radio questions

Start with the tech test and go from there...
