So, the reviews indicate these are really fairly easy to break into and that the locking mechanism parts are made of easily breakable plastic. Are they still worth buying based on those facts?

I'd not use it as a primary holder for safekeeping but
for a quick access box if kids are around inside.
Maybe a holder in the garage while you have the door open in the summer and don't want to carry of leave it sitting on a bench.

Depends what you intend to use it for. Many people are using as just temporary storage. I don't think anyone buys this with the intent of protecting against someone that really has time and wants to get what is inside it out.
