As all the old timers here have heard me say many times, it's absolutely worthless, wasting your time, to call C's customer service idiotic idiots. They know nothing, can only see what's on the computer screen in front of them, and many times, not even that. Using some of the "tricks" we learned, many of us use to order ammo from their warehouse. Newbies would call customer service and try the same. CS says it isn't in stock, but we have the confirmed orders that say otherwise. And we would receive the order in a few days.
Anyway, yes sales tax has always made the difference, at least to me. Again, in the olden days I use to do my Cabela's ordering in Florida and my Gander ordering in Nevada. This avoided the 7-8% sales tax. When you are buying $$$$ it really mounts up.
I still use what we use call comparison charts that I make up for most of the 22lr and 223/556. It's quicker for me, but most can't use them as you must first go to C's and then to their bargain cave. Then the chart(s) will come up. Otherwise a screen comes up as not available ... Try it sometime with the link below. This is just one, now two, of the 22lr charts I use. It's really simple and if you double click on the price column, it will list in stock items by price first. In the ole days, it was important to know the item's product number and variant number. Not so now, at least not so much. Anyway, take a look at what's on sale at C's in 22lr. Remember, this is a major holiday weekend. Look at their rimfire page. Nada. Nothing. Not a single item. What's worse, most the these items can be had elsewhere for 20%+ less and sometimes with no tax. Really sad, as it nullifies the use of 20% gift cards. It was great when the items went on sale and AJ was added into the deal. Those times are gone, I'm afraid. Like others have posted, I'll see what happens around BF, then probably call it quits.

Re cabelas usefulness:
They often have sales on hornady bullets and with the rebates and free shipping that beats anything I can find on ammoseek.
Plus ‘full price’ items that no vendor discounts like nightforce scopes or leica binos are a good buy with the gift cards, AJ and the 10% for cabelas visa member day sales.
But BJ not shipping to CA sucks...
