Boyds doesn't want to ship thumbhole and certain AK stocks to CALI, so passed on them and their horrible reviews many years ago.

I'm building a target rifle (.22lr, KIDD stuff mostly) and have the hogue overmolded bull barrel that I picked up locally for $50 to start with. I'm planning on upgrading that once the gun is finished. Are these boyds a noticeable performance upgrade or just mostly cosmetic?
They really look nice in pictures and most of the recommended stocks for a precision gun look ugly to ok IMO

I would say cosmetic. They look pretty and the finish is decent. They work for plinkers but they aren't going to be perfect out of the box. Fitting will require some work and likely laminate material removed. I have a Boyds barracuda on a 10/22 with a green mountain barrel- shoots great, maybe a 50 cent piece at 100 yards if I do my part. That said- there are better.

If you are building a 10/22 for serious precision, use a Tactical solutions or a Bell & Carlson. Hogue would be a good budget choice. Get the stock properly bedded to fit your receiver and barrel- this will make the biggest difference.
