For a fee of Care Refresh ($99), Mavic will send you a new drone if you ruin yours. And then another one. But the third one is on you. Of course there is a deductible the two replacements aren't free.

As the market leader in easy-to-fly drones and aerial photography systems, DJI quadcopters like the Phantom are the standard in consumer drone technology.

"DJI offers a "Care" package for $99 which amounts to insurance that will replace your drone up to twice if you destroy it in a crash or drowned it in water for a deductible of $79 the first time and $129 the second."

FWIW there is a shop selling "manufacturer refurbished" Mavic Pro's on eBay for $669 (90 day warranty, free ship/no sales tax):

They were recently selling them for $699, but with the standard Mavic Pro prices dropping due to the potential near-term release of the Mavic Pro 2, they also recently dropped their price for the "refurbs."

And I would challenge anyone to be able to tell that it is a refurb. DJI has done it in the past, and they may be doing it again - Giving their dealers cut price new inventory to sell as refurbs to get inventories down before a new product launch.

I don't believe that the Care Refresh program is available for "refurb" products, but I'm not one who believes in buying into those anyway.

No one is certain what the Mavic Pro 2 will have (and folks are now saying that the launch may be delayed until June), but to me the biggest potential improvement will be if it has the 1" CMOS sensor which is now exclusively in the Phantom 4 Pro (until you get up to the Inspire professional series drones). With that said, however, the current Mavic Pro is an excellent drone with an excellent camera. Add a set of the new DJI 8331 props and it will fly quieter and longer. I generally get 23-25 minutes of flight time per battery, and that's with a lot of maneuvering and shooting video.

Wish I had this for my Phantom 4 that I flew into a tree and destroyed.

O.K., for those who might really want to go off the deep end- B&H is selling (today, 3/14 only) the Phantom 4 Advanced for $829 shipped. So only $60 more than the lowered Mavic Pro price.

              Pros of P4 Advanced:
Biggest pro is the full 1" CMOS sensor which provides superior stills and video. You also get a larger drone which is a more stable filming platform as compared to the Mavic Pro, and which is easier to see in the sky. I have both and have also found that the P4 ADV or P4 Pro have longer flight times as compared to the Mavic Pro, even when you put the more efficient 8331 props on the MP. Also, surprisingly, the P4A/P4P is nearly as agile in the air as the MP, and just as fast.

What are the cons? Size and bulk. You take the P4A/P4P when you need the best footage, but you pay a price for that footage in portability and weight. Although there are backpacks which fit the Phantoms, you don't just pop that drone and controller into your standard backpack and take off. Also the batteries for the P4A/P4P are nearly 2x the cost of those available for the MP.

Both drones are incredibly easy to fly, and have the same long range (4.3 miles) and fantastic build quality. The remote for the P4A/P4P is more like that of an older RC Model Airplane remote, whereas the folding remote of the MP is more like a video game remote.

I've been talking above like the Phantom 4 Advanced and Phantom 4 Pro are virtually identical. In my opinion they are - the only major difference is that the Advanced model only has forward and downward sensing/obstacle avoidance (just like the MP) whereas the Pro adds side and rear sensors as well. Side sensors are a bit of a pain to me as they sometimes refuse to let the bird fly through a smallish opening or tunnel (although you can temporarily defeat them). Rear sensors are a good option, however, as you will find yourself flying backwards a lot if you get into drone cinematography.

So the P4 ADV is an incredible drone at a fantastic price (for the next 12 hours). It normally runs around $1100-$1200 whereas the P4 Pro is generally $1350 and up.

But whether it is good for you depends on whether you want to capture absolutely the best video and stills from a consumer level drone, or whether you really want the great portability and very good video from a smaller, folding drone. Just like with guns, the best drone/camera you have is the one you have with you.

A bit more information pertaining to my above post:

DJI is well known to launch new and improved products every 6 months or so. There is some pretty good speculation that the new Mavic Pro II will be launched in late Spring, early Summer, and it may get more flight time and the vastly improved camera with 1" CMOS sensor (current Mavic sensors are 1/2.3"). It is speculated to be a bit larger in size as compared to the current MP, but it will still be very capable, portable and foldable. And more expensive.

Rumors also abound about the Phantom 5 coming out maybe at the end of the year. More flight time and and an even further improved camera (perhaps with a zoom lens?) may come with that revision, along with (perhaps) folding legs (like on the Inspire pro-level drones). And a higher price is also natural.

DJI and their large retail partners (like B&H) have historically dropped existing drone prices when new product announcements are imminent. This seems to be happening again.

Some folks love to only get the latest and greatest in tech, but they pay the price for it. Personally I like to buy tech on its downward price curve - it is already vetted, by no means obsolete and can admirably do the things I need it to do.

So even though better (and more expensive) offerings are coming from DJI this year, this current sale for the P4 ADV is still pretty incredible. It is still a generally state-of-the-art camera drone which was only launched in November of 2017.

But if you want/need the newest and best, then don't buy right now...

Depends on how much you want to fly now.

The Mavic Pro prices have dropped somewhat, and will likely drop more. Can't say how much or when, but probably by maybe $150 or less in the near term.

So you can get some great prices now (like the $669 "refurb" on eBay which sure looked brand new to me) and get to flying. Or you can chase the newest tech or lowest price of the older tech for a while - all that time not having anything to fly.

Personally if something will meet my needs and the price now seems fair to me (in relation to other drones in the company's line, previous pricing and any other competitive drones), I pull the trigger. The price may drop lower in a month, but I've been flying, practicing, enjoying and filming for that month.

It does seem kind of odd to me that DJI has apparently delayed the launch of the MP 2. I wonder whether it is because they don't really have any competition outside of their own products at the moment.

GDU is late in launching their sliding arm O2, but it seems like some are being sold or will be available very soon in China. I don't really see it as an awesome competitor for the Mavic Pro but it is a 4k unit with 3 axis gimbal, and GDU knows its way around the drone market. But the more realistic Mavic Pro competitor will be the GDU O2+ (plus), which will at least have a reasonable range like the MP (and maybe an improved camera). Launch date? Who knows.

Then there is the also delayed Evo by Autel Robotics. This could be a serious competitor to the Mavic Pro, but it is not much more than CES demo units and vaporware at the moment.

I personally think that DJI might be waiting for one of these other companies to announce full production or shipping before launching the MP 2, thereby stealing their thunder (and immediately hurting their sales).

If you recall DJI announced the Mavic Pro about a week after GoPro introduced the Karma, and the Karma (along with other problems) could never achieve any sales momentum against the smaller, more portable Mavic Pro.

Thanks, I think I would prefer a new one over and refurbished one. My family and I are going from California to north Carolina to south Carolina to Georgia and back and wanted to buy a drone to take.

they say but when my printer at work broke i returned it after 20 months and they still credited me back. The clerk told me 2 years and this was maybe 6 months ago. call and check but costco has a very loose return policy.

what if you bought in a printer for refund that was smashed to bits, as a drone that fell from the sky would be?
