Military Grade Upper Assemblies
If you’ve been looking into building your own AR type rifle you probably know that there are a lot of differences between the rifles the military carry and the ones civilians typically own. These differences go well beyond automatic vs. semi-automatic. Typically the less money you spend the greater the differences become.
The main differences with regards to the upper assemblies are:
1) Twist Rate: Military issue upper assemblies come with a barrel that has a 1:7 twist (with some specialized rifles having a 1:8 twist). That means the rifling has one full twist for every seven inches. Most civilian uppers today come with only a 1:9 twist. Despite claims to the contrary by less reputable dealers the 1:9 twist can not shoot as wide a variety of ammo as the 1:7 twist upper can. You need the “faster” 1:7 twist rate to handle heavy Sierra Match Ammo. And while you might shoot low end ammo most of the time, it is nice to know that if you were to shoot the high end stuff your upper could handle it.
2) Chrome-Lining: Military issue upper assemblies come with a chrome-lined chamber and bore. This chrome-lining extends the life of the rifle so that it won’t wear out so fast. Most civilian uppers are not chrome-lined.
3) Feed ramps: Newer military issue upper assemblies come with feed ramps cut into the upper receiver. These groves line-up with the rifling of the barrel and allow the ammo to feed into the chamber without jamming. They increase reliability. Most civilian uppers do not have feed ramps.
4) Barrel length: Military issue carbines such as the M-4 have shorter barrels than their civilian counterparts. This is due to a federal law that says the total barrel length has to be 16 inches long. There is a loop hole that says if they permanently attach the flash hider then it counts as part of the barrel, but most civilian upper assemblies do not exploit this loop hole.
While many brands offer these things as upgrade options, but the time you are done adding them you end up spending well over $650. We have a better option.
We offer upper assemblies that have specs that are 95%-100% the same as their military issue counterparts (depending on which model you select).
Please Note: All upper assemblies come with a bolt, carrier and charging handle. They all have 1:7 twist rates, chrome-lined chambers and bores, and extended feed-ramps.
