Why use a hardened steel? I have used standard A-36 H.R. for mine. I also kicked it back 25 degrees at the bottom so as to avoid a richocette back at my kids. The 5.56 rounds go through it, but thats my intention. Just wondering if I did something wrong, by not using hardened steel.

It should be obvious what the difference is and the advantage of hardened steel. You said it yourself! The 5.56 rounds go right through your targets. They get shot up, sharp, and don't last very long. Hardened steel targets are (nearly) impervious to the rounds they are rated for and can be used nearly indefinitely if used at the proper distance with the rounds it is rated for.

For example, 1/2 AR500 plate will last almost indefinitely against 5.56 if you place the target at good distance (at least 100 yards) and don't us AP or penetrator ammo.

Yeah I see what your saying, but my intention IS for them to go through it and into the sand bags. My girls hit a 2"x2"x 3/8" thick plate at 300 yards with ss109 rounds. I make them, they kill them. I was just wondering if I did something wrong by not using AR plate. I appreciate your info though, it has helped me, thx.

Nice targets, looks like they are well constructed.

Will you be in Ontario as well?
A good way to threaten somebody is to light a stick of dynamite. Then you call the guy and hold the burning fuse up to the phone. "Hear that?" you say. "That's dynamite, baby."
