If you've been curious and skeptical to the efficacy of a red-dot on a handgun but you don't want to dump $500 on a new slide or on expensive, permanent machining (and then you're out a pistol slide if you don't like it) then you may be interested in the BALOR Optic mounts by Raven Concealment. A non-permanent but robust mount, the BALOR is compatible still with most of the holsters already have.
The BALOR mounts to all double-stack 9mm, .40 caliber, and .357 SIG Glock pistols. While it may not sit as low as a machined optic but this slight offset can be overcome through practice. Machining a slide after it has been finished exposes untreated metal and may lead to fractures in the slide that will ultimately fail, especially if the machining was done by a less than competent gunsmith. The BALOR is less of a risk and integrates iron sights into the base for co-witnessing.
