I track my zeros on a wire bound index card set, anything more than that is a distraction as a shooter needs to be looking downrange at wind and mirage.

I would like to see something that I could use when I start using a ballistic app. Like to have a written history of my data with the same parameters

My reasoning behind the data book is to prevent reliance on the BC. Yes the data is good to have but its never perfect.

I also don't mean a full on sniper book. There is far too much junk in a military issue or military simulated sniper data book that a civilian long-range shooter doesn't need or should have to pay for

What I mean are drop charts, shot logs and some cheat sheets that's it

Maybe I'm just a little more meticulous then everyone else but every time I change my ammunition load or lot I recalibrate my drop chart to verify the drops at every yardage increment and comparing them to my data chart to be sure that my data going out to 1000 yards is right on the money

I just use a plain 5x7 note book. But I mostly use that for an improvised range card if its a multiple target engagement situations.

The only thing a data book is good for is to challenge the official score.Once you have info from a match its old and out of date.
Time spent recording data are points lost on target.

well I use one for recording where my reloads actually hit the target at different ranges as ballistic computers Suck. I also use it for recording wind data and where I have my rifle dialed into. I have other crap to think about and don't need to clutter up my head with stuff i can take a second to write down.

I don't know what you mean by challenging the official score. If I were a match official and a shooter tried to argue a shot by hit data book call. I'd tell him to go pound sand it the holes in the paper that matter

For NRA highpower matches (XTC, Mid range, or long range), there is a target puller and a score keeper supporting the shooter on the mound.

There is also a process, as provided by the NRA highpower rulebook, where the shooter can challenge the value of the shot. Errors can happen from the target puller or score keeper.

If you are in So Cal (LA, OC or SD), check out the highpower matches at MCB Pendleton. These matches are sponsored by Santa Margarita Gun Club. If you want to venture into long range, then the club offers a 3x1000 venue on Range 117A. Check it out.

                          I'm real interested.
I plan to do some LR shooting next year after many years of being out of the game. I've been looking at some data books online but I'd like to see what works for you.

Thanks but I have zero desire to compete in any kind of sanctioned or non sanctioned event. I have a location that I can shoot that provides me with as much open space to shoot any caliber I desire at any range I can muster. That and I don't have to deal with Range officials, I can work up loads off the back of my truck and I can sit down at night around the camp fire and have a beer if i like.
