Where to shoot 2000+ yards in socal?

I used to have a spot in the Socal desert near Johnson Valley where we could shoot a mile, but it has been taken over by a marijuana grow. We have done 1700 yards at a spot in Calico, and while it isnt bad, I would prefer topography that would make it easy to spot other people, mostly offroaders, long before they ever come into our line of fire.

I'm looking at a spot north of Baker, and south of Dumont dunes called the Silurian Hills. Per SB county's map, it is perfectly legal. Have any of you ever shot there? Is it worth the drive, and would you consider the set up safe? I like being able to have a good view all around to ensure everyone is safe, and I prefer not to be anywhere near any roads or residences.

Are there any other (specific) areas you would recommend? I hate asking this question because the answers I get are vague ("high desert" or "Hodge Road"), and usually based on hearsay.

Depends on where you're coming from too...I would look at spots in the low desert for myself, like the east side of the Salton Sea or south of the 10 toward the Chuckwallas, or maybe west of Rice road. Just ideas for wide open spaces.

There are plenty of areas. I am hesitant to recommend as I don’t know what kind of rig you drive or your tolerance for 4x4.

The silurian area you mentioned is good and as safe as anywhere, very little traffic as long as you are away from the off-road areas. On the west side of the 127 is all wilderness, so no motorized access. Get a good map like Gaia or OnX to show you ownership, wilderness, etc.

I know the ELR and King of 2 Miles was held right off the 40 by the telephone wires. No idea on their spot , I emailed them several years ago about it. I have a spot that you can get 2,000 but there are telephone guys and some off roading dome, so you have to vigilant.

Let us know what you find or PM me. I'd take a day and go look in my truck or CanAm

Coming from Rancho Cucamonga, so low desert is definitely in play. I've always gravitated towards the high desert for two reasons: I am fairly familiar with a lot of it due to years of dirt bike riding. I know what areas are "remote" enough that most offroaders dont go there. Also, I am more familiar with San Bernardino County's firearms laws.

My old spot was about a 1:20 drive, Calico being about 1:45. I'm open to driving a bit further if the spot warrants it. I suppose the east side of the Salton Sea ia right about the 2 hour mark.

Recommend away. I currently drive a 2wd pickup, but I know how to get it down some hairy trails. That being said I will soon have a 4x4, so whatever you feel comfortable sharing, Im all ears.

                  Private range.
Has pits and electronic target frames too.
The pits can be seen via google maps at 34.90467443624284, -119.4975988433187

I am also looking at the area north of I15 at Zzyzx road, near the Blue Bell mines. Anyone have any experience shooting up there?

You might be too close to Ft Irwin for their comfort.

Look on google map and find red mountain and the grass valley wilderness area.
Between those two is a dry lake bed.
To the northwest of that dry lake bed are red mountains.
There are several roads in that area where you can setup targets and shoot safely against the mountains and there is good visibility for offroaders so you can stop as they pass through your area of operation.

You could easily shoot 2 miles in the dry lakebed.

                        Google Map, "Tricounty Rifle range"

We'll be shooting 600 and 1000 yard matches this Saturday starting at 8:00 AM with open shooting in the afternoon.

I'll bump the match post with details.
