Which ballistic software do you use?

I watched the Rex (tibasaurus) YouTube sniper series of videos (all 100 of them). I downloaded the excel templates that he had to calculate drop and windage adjustments. I also used jbm ballistics website, strelok and ballistic arc apps to calculate some adjustments. Using the same inputs on each template or app I got different results with each product. Example: for 1000 yds my elevation adjustment was either 6.4mils, 7.9, 8.4 or 9.2. So based on these varying results between platforms what source have you found most valuable when calculating elevation and windage? Thanks in advance for your input. And I'm sure some of these sources have advantages over others, but just looking to hear about other people's experiences.

I have had the Ballistics AE app on the iphone and it was good but not as good as Applied Ballistics app. I will tell you that every minor detail needs to be input and input correctly. Also No app can correctly predict wind values. They won't even be close. The best wind hold predictor is practice and experience. The reason I say that is because you have no idea exactly at what range the wind is acting on your projectile and for how long. not to mention does that wind vary at different ranges, which all wind does. The app will just spit out a drift for a given wind. but where on the range was that wind? was it at the shooter? at the target? Somewhere in-between? or is it like shooting a range that I frequent where at certain time of the day each and every wind flag on the range is doing something different and I mean drastically different. we have had more than once a wind reading on the range via flag indication from 8-18 MPH pointing the flags in every direction possible. Eight flags at various ranges and two flags at the same distance could be pointing at each other. flags at the shooter show a tail wind, flags at 600 yrds show a full on head wind then the flags at the targets are just in a gentle breeze. How is an APP going to figure that out?? You shoot through it using a spotter and find out what the wind is doing and apply a value to it.

I will also tell you that due to the wind calculation being applied to your drop you may see a variation in your elevation. wind = drag. Drag = lower performance of the projectile and a higher number on your drop chart.

I use the AB app for elevation only. I rely on flags or natural wind indicators for wind and experience in what my load do in a given wind. That said you need to use Altitude density as well. either via a good Kestrel or an App on the phone that can calculate station data and not rely on a feed from a local weather station that could be miles from your location. I had my dope dialed in on the App to within 1/2 Mil or about 1.7 MOA then I started using Altitude density and i was +/- 1/10 mill with wind drag included so I'd say from experience my dope on the app is within 1/10 mill minus the wind. I was able to prove this at a range 165 mils from my house that I had never shot. I reset my data to the current AD and got my drop for 1000 yards and it was off by 1/10 mil but that was also shooting through 1.5 to 2.7 mills of left wind. I'm confident in my app to give me proper dope now.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I appreciate the time spent sending this detailed response. Im having a blast learning about this and everyday im just looking forward to getting back to the range again.

I’ll add that I also use the JBM calculator online for getting and comparing data in loads. It’s a good accurate tool just not very user friendly on a smartphone

            Yes sir.
I showed up Thursday to get dope on the rifle. Only took eight shots and after switching to altitude density my data is spot on perfect.

Yeah 117A great place to learn to read wind or go bananas trying to figure it out.

The last program I used was "Load from a disk," until the computer I used it on was stolen. For my purposes, I used it to build preliminary dope sheets for my Rem 700 .308.

Now that I have some new rifles, looked for my original CD, gone. There is a more recent version for download but I want my old version back. Does anybody out there still have it? It may not be the best but it was good enough for me. Options, copy the cd, zip into a file, etc.

Can anybody out there help me - Jim

sorry never heard of the program you're looking for although a quick google search pulled up a place to download it maybe for a fee,

With all the resources out there i'd just get a free phone app or use the JBM calculator.

Strelok. Free download. Input your details and can save multiple loads. Can adjust angle of shot as well. Bought a Sig 1400 BDX Rangefinder which apparently also measures your angle for more precise data. Also includes tables like the JBM program.

That is Simmons rifle. It started as a Rem 700 308 and he installed a new action on it. It’s a carbon fiber tube frame that he made and it’s supported by a carbon fiber bipod that he also made. Simmon routinely shoots in the high 180’s to the low 190’s. IIRC. He has shot above 195 more than a few times and shot a few cleans, The reason behind the odd stock is to save weight. His barrel is heavy and he is right at the weight limit. That picture was taken at Twentynine Palms I believe last november due to the clear picture. They shut down the 2016 match do to wind, so much sand locked up a few guns and your could not see the targets.

Here's my fat Arse getting schooled by Mr. Roth one of our High masters. This guy routinely shoots above 194 out of 200 with a high X count. He knows how to read wind.

Here's a better shot of the same gun

And another shot of me on the firing line.
