Picking the Right Sight - Data overload

Been doing a lot of research. Web, videos (in between other videos) and wow. On some site (tiberius?) shows a list of scopes and various values. Is there a data base of such info more up to date?

Not in a hurry but still working on the knowledge to pick the best choice out the gate. FFP vs Sfp. Zero stop.. etc..etc..

There might be a post somewhere here. .lord knows i am in Overload of info!!

again thanks. really great site. and people.

Start with what you want to do with it.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

      First pick a purpose.
then pick a range ( this will give you a base line on magnification)

then pick a unit of measure and a resolution. (Mil or Moa, and 1/10 mil or 1/4 or 1/8 moa.)
FYI 1/10 mil = a little more than 1/3 moa so you can see mil is kinda coarse

Then you can filter through the BS and pick something that works.

Thanks guys. doing more research locating the data spreadsheet i saw that list most of the scopes out there.

so.. at first vortex.. while reading.. luepold.. more reading.. swfa.. and more reading.. lol. Steiner. (thats where i am at now).

looking at semi long range. (i was going to get the 308 but saw the 6.5 creed and the rounds were about the same price..

at this stage looks like about 2k for a scope. i get the buy once, cry once.. but i seem to put more into the due diligence on research and never look back. (being decisive is a quality that is needed but when you have the luxury of time, take it). If i am going to spend 1500.. why not 2k..

and yes, kcscott. there is alot to pick units of measure.. ffp,spf... the correct reticle..

again, thanks. if i find anything i'll be sure to post it.

Because spending 2k doesn't mean you are going to get what's right for you.

Again... what do you want to do with it?

What does semi long range mean?
What do you want to shoot at?
What rifle is it going on?
What are the conditions being shot in?

I mean, if you just want to buy "the best" then buy whatever the hell makes you feel good about your purchase because you aren't going to use it anyway.

I think what we have here is a case of someone that is going to buy something based on what it is to others not necessarily what he needs. I know I'm going to piss off the OP with that statement but ignoring direct question on how what and when, and expecting a solid answer is ridiculous

So Hostlie SS what you need to do is go back read the questions that were posed to you, Answer them the best you can and then a recommendation can be made. you don't need a spread sheet list of the bells and whistles. you just need to figure out a unit of measure, and a distance you desire to shoot. then the type of shooting you desire to do. will it be hobby shooting off a bench at a local range Pala perhaps or will you be doing local PRS matches, F class, or competition bench rest?? see all of those have a bearing on what type of scope to get, more so what reticle to get. So again Answers like "Semi long range" are of no use, I need a window of distance, say 300-800 yards or 600 to 1500 yards something like that.

Thanks guys and God no Kcstott. (if my ex wife was unable to break and my Senior DI unable to.. lol ) my response was more due to time to discretion on writing a 2pg essay.. lol..

All good points you posted and once i get a break at work i will put those down to paper and start the process of determining what i really want. and actually what i want now vs later is my main objective. Maybe i will never shoot 1k. butttt.... if i do decide to 6 mts down the road..

i could pick up a ss scope at x10 and be happy with my limited range options close to home.. but thats.. 3-400.

again, no problems with you guys telling me how it is. Videos and reading only narrow the choices.. at some point you gotta stop putting your toes in the water and jump the hell in...

                thanks and will keep posted.

                i do appreciate the help!!!

                /Semper

If you don't know what you want to do (which is ok) then just buy something cheap that gets good reviews and go shoot. The activity will tell you what you like and don't like and then you can spend real money on what works for you.

At this stage whatever you buy next will be "the wrong thing" so don't kill your budget on it. Just get something so that the next thing will be more correct.
