Help me out on a scope please

Have an AR 308 18" match barrel and Timney 3 lb trigger. I can do 1/2 inch at 100 most probably limited by me. I have a Leupold 3x9 hunting scope on it. I'm going to start doing some long range tactical shooting. I'm looking at this

Want FFP, MIL so this should fit the bill. Any feedback appreciated. Do I need higher magnification to get out to 600 to 1000 yards. Thinking that's the limit with this firearm. Any other options +/- $300.

I had a 16x Vortex PST for a long time and shooting to 800yards a few times. No problem.

Jumped to a 24x but haven't really taken the rig out for a long time.... I shoot a tikka t3 ctr 308.

FFP for 300 bucks is rather hard... Perhaps primary arms has a few items but at 1000yards 16x would be my start.

FWIW the Tracking is supposed to be unparalleled and glass is better than PST (not razor hd). However, i've spent so many hours reading about scopes and there are millions of rabbit holes that can lead to every scope being the best for one reason or another.

I'd recommend more magnification. 25 power. but that's me and that said my AR308 is topped with a leupold 6-18x40 Mark AR scope and I do just fine out to 800 meters with it. the rifle is capable of .5 moa all day long. 18" barrel too.

I'm not a fan of FFP for general shooting and target shooting, unless you are shooting PRS matches the FFP will not be of any real benefit. I shoot a Leupold Mk4 8.5-25x50 and rarely back of the magnification. scope may as well be a fixed power for what i do.

Not sure your budget is realistic for a thousand yard scope. However, I shoot up to 500 yards and my SWFA scope works great. 10X power. I don't know if it would be enough for more than 500 or 600 yards.

Sorry for the confusion: I was looking at the Vortex list plus $300 or minus. Price range is $500-1100 give or take.

Thanks for the feedback. My budget is up to $1000-1200 with a 30 mm tube assuming scope mount listed is ok. Less if I need a new base. I see several in that range on the Reddit list ranging from $600 for th Vortex Viber HS 6x24 to $1100 for Sightron SIII 6x24. Are the bases listed ok out to 1000 yds?

I'm going to just go down the list here. I'll be blunt but by no means do i mean anything in a rude way....there's just conceptions and misguided terms amongst the internet that may have pivoted or deviated from its origins.
So what is "tactical long range" to you? Further more what is long range to you. You'll need to identify that, because there words have many meanings. Tactical in the world of killing people will be more of "an adaptive advantage in combat" Long range to me is 600-1000 and ELR 1000-2200 and then field artillery for everything else (Stupidly Extreme Range).

If you want long range out of an .308 and with the MV provided out of an 18 inch barrel, you'll need to have realistic expectations. For that guy that's reading this thinking "I shoot at 1000y all day with an 18" barrel...." Yeah its doable, but where are you hitting transonic at? If we are still talking about "tactical" long range then what are terminal ballistics looking like hitting subsonic? and with what a 175 smk? or sacrifice some more b.c for a 168 gr? You are already losing some b.c on the slack of the MV from the shorter barrel.

10x in a scope will get you on a 10.5 inch target at 1000y (head shot?) a 15x is more than enough. If you want to be at 105414i41401x magnification than cool, it makes throwing a range est in mils a little easier especially on small targets but for shooting, you'll notice reticle bounce more and it will mess with shooters who aren't use to controlling their breathing/heart rate. If you want to be like them F class dudes (not tactical) then you can use your million power to get all up in the target at distance if going for MOA. which is cool too and can help with truing but then again so does a spotting scope...and a spotter and a set of calipers..or however you want to do it when you get there.

30mm base? You will want at least a 30mm tube..and perhaps you are talking about a 30 moa base? or maybe i read something wrong. UTG and a few others make 20 moa risers ans some one piece scope rings that do the same.
If you are actually using dope that gets to the point of needing the extra (about) 15 moa (4.44 mils) after averaging for your zero, your bullet will be flipping down into the dirt.

Vortex is a decent company. Just be aware of tracking issues that occasionally happen with the PST line but either way you should be checking for tracking error on a tall target test and recording and apply any offset value to the unit value..the as long as its consistent, it can be made to work.
You can always build on the rifle but the price you are willing to put on good glass will bring value to your shooting. Just a suggestion AROUND yout price point, check out steiner. No shame in buying used too. Sometimes you can get a deal on a well kept good scope. Hope some sarcasm and straight points was not angering. PM if you have any technical questions.
