Pendleton would actually be a great spot. Problem is range assignment and allocation. I've only been third party to the conversations at the range on what these guy have to do to get stuff done, lots of hoops to jump through.
Problem is it takes months of planning ahead filing paperwork, staffing requirements of RSO's and medics.. it's not something you can throw together in a few weeks and call good.
Imperial county has all the flat wide open land you so desire. the problem with that is no one wants to drive. Everyone wants to shoot long range within a 30 minute drive from home.
Sorry I had to vent. I've heard "Too far to drive" too damn many times. if you want to shoot you'll find away.
Other thing is if you want flat easy access to the targets you need FWD in Imperial, simple as that. I've been to places out there where you could set up a target close to 2 miles out. it's just sand pure sand and you need FWD

People do have matches on base time to time but I'm not sure what leg work that's needed.

Every month SMGC has matches at Camp Pendleton

                Shot a few of them

First of all there is a 'caliber restriction' at the moment - but they are working on that problem

And than secondly I have no clue if the Base Commander wants a few hundred people at the Base in the weekend

                But it might work . . .

Contact SMGC and see what they think about it

I know they did a PRS match a while ago

It's not "people" it's the Santa Margarita Gun Club.
There are typically matches two to three times a month,
Mid range high power, XTC high power, and Long range.

Head over to https://www.smgunclub.org/ to see how you can participate. the club is having a 1000 yard match this weekend. and you can shoot if you register by wednesday 12pm and you are shooting .300 win mag, .308 win, or 5.56/.223. The club has not received it approval for other calibers as of yet. That i know of.

Match cost is $35 for non members if I remember correctly and you can pay for a target puller (not always available) for an additional $25.

It is NRA LR range high power format.

Meaning you will fire three strings of fire 20 rounds each for score with unlimited sighter your first relay and two sighters for you second and third relay. You'll have 30 minutes for your first string and 22 minutes for each string there after.

We shoot F class open, & TR, Match rifle, Palma and black powder cartridge But note the above caliber restrictions, I do not know if we have authorisation to use the Black powder cartridges due to not being approved on anything else yet.

the sniper range only has 8-10 firing positions so on a we typically only use 6-7 of them, in a three relay shoot, so 18-to 21 shooters.
the Wilcox 103 range has close to if not more then 100 firing positions.

A typical mid range has about 30-50 shooters showing up and if you worried about base command and the number of people. you need to be there for the Camp pend open and the fire and police games, that's a large turnout.

and the way guys are on Calguns, you'll end up with 3-4 hundred saying they'll be there and two will show up. This place is rampant with flakes

I want it to be clear that it is a Gun Club that hosts the matches. Saying "People" generalizes it to much making it sound like a public range with public access and "people" doing informal "Hold my beer and watch this" type shooting. I bet Harry and Mike get a few emails a month asking about, "Just using the range for practice". sorry that stuff don't happen.

I want it perfectly clear this is a USMC Base, civilians are guests. The SMGC is an authorised host and everyone that shows up is required to play by all the rules not just SMGC's.
