    Long range newb

Ive recently wanted to get into long distance shooting and was wondering if people here had suggestions on a good starting place.

Ive been shooting for a long time now and am constantly getting hooked on more and more shooting sports. I was into uspsa for a while and went over to trap and skeet. Ive always been hesitant in diving into long range because i never knew where to begin.

Currently i have a howa 1500 heavy barrel in 308. Ive shot it once years ago. Right now i have the time and more imortantly the patience to appriciate long range shooting. When i was younger all i needed was my akm and some surplus ammo out in blm and bumpfire to my hearts content. Ive grown up and am excited to start this new sport.

That being said angeles would be the closest place for me to shoot long range. Can anyone recomend me beginer classes or maybe some of you more expierenced vets would be interested in letting a newbie hang around and ask some dumb questions.

Burbank Rifle and Revolver Club holds Mid Range 600 yard matches. The range is in Castaic.

Santa Margarita Gun Club holds Mid Range 600 yard and Long Range 1000 yard matches on Camp Pendleton.

Check their websites for match dates.

You can go to a match as a non-firing observer. Talk to the people there and find out what you need to get started.

Screw that, Get good solid reloads or FGMM 175 SMK's plug the data into the AB app get your come up for 914 meters or 1000 yards.
Show up find someone to help you spot, put a few into the 800 yards berm dial up another mil and be on the water line then fire your 20 for record.

That's how i started, Literal trial by fire. I showed up, I had computer generated dope that was not very good but that was my fault, crap data in equals crap data out. My first shot hit the 800 yard berm, I miled my impact and dialed in ten clicks. that put me about a foot above center so down three clicks and no I'm on the water line. I spent way too much time fighting that wind my first day shooting sighters and only go t 14 rounds for record my first relay. Second and third relay were better. At least i had all 22 rounds on paper and shot a 160 something and a 174 I want to say, so a 8.0-8.5 average first day that's 3 moa in some funky wind range 117A is known for.

Marc the sling shooter shoots low to mid 190's thats iron sights at 1K yards then we have our F open guys that just put everyone to shame, some phenomenal shooters that have the ability to read that wind like no other.

Mike, Mark, Duane, Walter, the top F open guys yeah these are the guys you want to hang out with a learn from. everyone there is pretty easy going humble and willing to help.

It's all about promoting the sport and keeping that club alive

If you don't have access to direct classes to get you started, here are some ideas that will provide you with the basics so you have a starting point when you get to the range.

While this set is currently unavailable at this link, you can search around and see if you can find it.

Midrange (300 to 600yd) is a little more forgiving than Long Range to jump into. I normally shoot at Pendleton (SMGC), but have shot a few times at Burbank Rifle Revolver Club and they are real helpful with newbies too. E-mail the match director "I'm a newbie and want to learn" and bring your rifle with Fed Gold Medal Match or other quality ammo. I'm positive you will get hooked up with someone to coach you through the day. We all started somewhere.

It is a great move OP> a few buddies and I have been getting into long range, so far 600 was our last goal and we hit it with confidence. Now shooting 100 seems a bit silly with anything but a red dot.

Our next adventure is to hit 800 then eventually a 1000.

Lytle, Burro, Angeles etc, start at the 100 and get comfortable with your optic and adjustments then go seek out 300.

                That works as well . . .

But we don't even know what scope and scope rail the OP has installed on the rife ?

                  OP-

The two clubs lists above are good....
Have you taken any long range classes or rifle shooting classes?

Can you shoot close to the accuracy of your rifle from field positions?
So if your rifle will shoot 1" at 100 yards from sand bags, how do you shoot from prone, sitting and standing?
I still cannot figure out how to shoot as well as my rifle....

Classes and clubs can make a huge difference in how you shoot...

Angeles is a fine place to get started. You can place paper target stands at 100, 200 and 300 yards on the rifle side. It does take some hustle to get out to the farther distances and back in the 5 minute cease-fire periods.

CAPRC used to hold monthly matches and shooting clinics at Angeles, but not anymore.

Burbank Rifle and Revolver Club holds several matches a month, of various formats. It is a private range, but the clinics and matches are open to the public.

West End Gun Club also holds monthly matches.

Matters not. Ok well a bit. a mil is 3.4377 moa, 14 clicks of a moa scope with 1/4 clicks or 27 clicks on a 1/8 click scope.

that only if he nails the 800 yard berm.

yeah he should have 18x or better and a 20 moa rail for sure.

And at SMGC there are plenty of people willing to help a new shooter. All you need to do is ask, Mike can pair you with someone willing to coach and spot.
We just need to know in advance.
I'm at damn near every LR match. I missed a few last year due to scheduling, mine and the clubs due to regionals and nationals going on. That and the military not granting access due to their training schedule

Awesome responses. I think working the mid range first is a good idea. I have virtually no expierence with bolt guns. My rifle was a howa 1500 target package i bought a year's ago. The package came with a nikko stirling 4-16x44 on it.
