Recommend me a caliber - details inside

Gentlemen (and Ladies), I have a sort of specific envelope and am looking for a recommendation.

Without going the custom route, and staying in the general factory bolt gun arena (the usual suspects: Remington, Savage, Ruger, Sako, Tikka, etc) AND for benchrest shooting out to no more than 600 yards maximum AND considering that most likely there will be no reloading, using only factory ammo, of these three:
    • .308
    • 6.5 Creedmore
    • .223

    What is your preference?

Or do you have a different favorite? 6mm BR .22 BR? Remember it needs to have factory loading options.

Thanks in advance, oh sage minds of CGN Longrange.
    /Chris

I have a perfect Burning Man attendance record: zero.

Rem700 PSS .308/Leupold 4.5x14 mil-dot is what I've used for years. I've let people with zero experience use it on bowling pins at 600yds and they did quite well. Ammo ranges from radway green to whatever surplus that I bought cheap and stacked deep. If I remember correctly it's zeroed at 200yds for whatever reasons escape my brain at the moment.

Yes, I had an Rem 700 LTR in .308 with that scope set-up and dammit it all I wish *still* had it. Great rig for that application.

6.5, Lots of good info available, great match ammo, great shooting caliber. The 308 can do the same same thing, especially at a max of 600. The 6.5 is a better choice if you ever decide to go longer.

I would go with this: http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12BENCHREST

and do a 6BR. In reality, you will probably end up reloading and the 6BR is one of the cheaper ones to load for. Brass lasts a long time, minimal powder and 6mm bullets are cheaper typically.

Very nice rifle, but it's overkill for my needs and 6BR isn't as readily available in a factory load as I need.

Longrange is BEYOND 600yds so what you are really looking for is a midrange rifle.
Your limitation to best accuracy will be the ammo.
What your factory ammo requirement in mind, go with a Ruger RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor.
6.5 will do much better in the wind past ~300yds than a 223 , without having as much recoil as a 308.

Thank you Randall, you are of course, correct. Mid-range is what I'm looking for. So you don't think the RPR is overkill for my needs? It *would* give me room to grow I suppose.

Given those 3 caliber choices, the 6.5 is the clear winner.
However, that limits your gun choices.
That's what makes the RPR the best option.

The next best choice would be a Remington 29663.
It's a 308 so it recoils a little more, but it's also going to be more precise/accurate because it has a better barrel than the RPR.
It also happens to be less expensive than an RPR if you don't want to spend $1300ish.

If you want to just buy a gun and shoot it and don't want to tinker, get the RPR.
If you want more options of future modifications, get the Remington 29663.

Get a 700 or clone with a switch barrel setup. Switch between calibers when you feel like it

                          Go with Randall's recommendation.
RPM 6.5 CM with a Nightforce NSX or Vortex Razor HD scope and you're set to play.
