I think it would be a good starter rifle, but isn't the R700 a long action rifle chambered in magnum cartridges? Does it come in .308??

I are you sure it was the "long range" model as it seems to use a long action, which Remington typically doesn't due in 308, but it certainly can be.

It looks like 30-06 is the smallest.

The rifle is a good 700 to start on since it will have a usable stock. Most Remington 700s have a stock that isn't usable so you need to replace it. With the LR option, it looks like the only real upgrades you'd likely want are to replace the trigger and get the muzzle threaded for a brake.

Really, R700s are basically all the same so it depends on whether you want to pay for the feature that Remington has added. With an R700, you can replace just about any part on the rifle since it is such a common gun.

I agree that it would not be a good place to start. If you get a .308, the one that is designated "5r milspec" with a 24" 1:11.25" twist is one of the better R700s as it has the best of the barrels and a stock that doesn't need to be ugraded. Like the LR model, you probably just need a new trigger and perhaps getting the muzzle threaded. That's a very good way to learn. Also, there seem to be a lot more offerings in 6.5 Creedmoor as it is a really popular cartridge now. It shoots well and is a bit more wind efficient than the 308, giving it more range.

if you double that price you can find a Remington 700 stainless 5R in .308
Best place to start in a .308 that is ready to roll out of the box. just add glass

I bought mine off GunBroker for 450.00. I am now upgrading/updating. New stock, mag system, trigger, and glass.

                  Thank you JMP.

Look for a used VS model.
