Recommendation for mounts and scope

I bought a Remington 700 XCR II in .338 RUM . I want to set this up as my elk hunting gun. Would like to get accurate shooting up to 500 yards or more if I am competent enough. From my research and budget I was looking at the Vortex Viper PST 6-24xFFP.

Any input on this scope and/or what rings to mount it with?

I honestly think its hard to beat vortex for the the quality of the riflescope and price. Ebr-2c reticle is a great reticle and i think for your application, getting the vortex match rings or any good quality 30 mm scope rings would be fine. it would be a lot cheaper than getting a spuhr mount or something of that class. I have the same scope with the EBR-2c reticle and I'm happy. You can get a 20 MOA base that screws onto the r700 receiver to give you a little more vertical adjustment range. The base will allow you to use whatever rings/mount you want. I use TPS steel rings on my bolt action rifle, and an AD recon 20 moa on my SA rifle.

I would not put a target scope on a hunting rifle.
I would be looking at models with capped knobs so they don't get disturbed while hiking.
