    6mm BR norma throat question,

I just rebarreled my Savage for some Varmint and paper punching.
dropped a Shilen 1:8 6mm BR onto the rig today,
and obtaining my max OAL with Hornady 105g match projectiles gives me
a MAX OAL of only 2.304". I know the minimum is 2.2" for 6mm BR Remington standard, but I thought the Norma was supposed to get me 2.44" for the heavies.
Will get the rig out in April for first shots, but anyone have a longer OAL on their rig for this?
30g varget nets great accuracy hoping that I dont compress too much if I can go that high.

not too many shooters here that post and shoot the 6 BR.

Go on accurateshooter for more help.

that being said, your OAL and CBTO (cartridge-base-to-ogive) length is governed by your rifle freebore and what brand/type of bullet you are shooting.

there is no "standard" for OAL. there is a SAAMI spec for the actual brass case, but typically not for OAL.

If you want a longer OAL/CBTO, then you want a longer freebore assuming you are measuring using a comparator like the hornady OAL gage.

bsumoba, gave you the best advice. Accurateshooter.com has a lot of info on reloading the 6mmbr.

I am curious, who, besides 3rdgeargrndrr and myself, shoots this cartridge?

I'm in the process of a 6 Dasher build.

I know a couple guys who shoot variants of the 6 BR. They are shooting a 6 BRX or 6 BR-DX.

There is a mid-range 200/500/600 match this weekend at Sav Valley. It will literally be the battle of the X's at these ranges and most/all of them will be shooting 6 Dashers, 6 BR, 6 BRX, or 6 BRDX.

They might see some 6.5's like the 6.5x47 lapua or they might even see some 6x47 lapua or even 6.5 creedmoor or 6mm creedmoor.

All I can say is you got to have your A game. When I mean battle of the Xs, I mean battle of the Xs because there will probably be a lot of clean relays.

@707electrician, I was so impressed with what the benchrest shooters could do with the 6mmbr cartridge, that I built a walking varminter in the same caliber. I used a Stiller Predator action, Krieger barrel 8tw, Jewell trigger, Leupold VX-3 4.5x14x40mm with side adjust focus. I shoot one load, an 87 grain Hornady V-Max, 30 grains Varget, Lapua cases, CCI 450 primers. This is one of my favorite rifles.

My father and myself both shot the standard 6BR for a decade before switching to the Dasher.

Most of the 6BR are put together to shoot the heavy for caliber bullets that run 103-108 grains.
Our reamer has 0.104 freebore and a 0.268 neck. The problem with 6BR.com is the owner over there Paul will edit your post without telling you.
Here is what the 6BR will help you get.

World Record holder, congrats. Your photo flash blurred out your group size.

I realize the 6mmbr shoots the heavier bullets very well, but my rifle is a walking varmiter, and I had a large supply of the V-Max bullets so I stuck with them. I should work up a long range load with a 100 plus grain bullet, but I rarely get opportunities to take shots at long ranges.

The best thing about shooting a 6BR and wearing it out is you can simply run in a 6/284 or 6mm/06 reamer and you don't have to set the barrel back.
Normally your gunsmith would cut the threads off and start fresh so as not to have a bulge in the new cartridge.
With the shoulder being so far back in the little 6BR case all you do is run the reamer in. No new shoulder or threads to cut plus you can use the reamer to indicate off of.

                          That's an option I hadn't thought of.
It was a savage though, after the cost of brass, dies , and chambering it would be the same as a new barrel... I don't like the trigger options for the savages as well so I've been thinning them out.
                          I ordered a panda f class today.

When I pull a 6BR barrel off of my target rifles I put in a 6mm/06 chamber and install it on a hunting rifle.

That's certainly better then sitting on a shelf or tomato stake. Thanks for the tip.
