    Black chroming gunsmiths

I have a colt 1911 and was thinking of black chroming it... Fords Gunshop doesn't offer it anymore. Does anyone know of a gunsmith in So. California that does black chrome?

They are expensive, though.. But they do all of chip foose custom work.. They do all the plating for mikes Gunsmithing, so they are familiar with working on guns... I will add that black chrome is not as durrable as standard chrome, and it's a fingerprint magnet.. Black chrome will be about double the price to standard chrome.

Black Chrome mostly decretive and needs another layer of hard chrome (copper/nickel/chrome plating) to give it any real corrosion resistance. The coating comes out very thick as well for (up 0.004 inch with hard chrome) so it definitely will affect tolerances on firearms like 1911 but not so much on a AK they very loose to begin with.

You can also coat it with Cerakote Armor Clear to better protect it while not adding to much thickness as well.
