shepherds crook?

I have a bulgarian built AK and needed to remove the shepherds crook, I am having a bit of an issue as it seems that is installed backwards from the factory. The open side of the crook is pointing towards the mag well. Any help would be great.

My answer would be to cut it and use a plate.
