    Install AK Barrel without Press?

I have an AK parts kit, and I've got just about everything de-milled, save for the gas block. I can't drive out those two pins for the life of me, already broke two punches trying, so I figured I'd just wait til I can find the air hammer.

My question is though, is there a way to install the barrel into the front trunnion without using a shop press? I don't own one, and I don't really have a need for one other than for this one project, so I don't want to go buy one just for one use, and I don't know anybody nearby that has one that I can borrow.

I've heard of people rigging their own setups to press the barrel, as well as the Toth Tool barrel press, as well as using a floor jack, but I don't know much about that particular process.

If anyone's pressed a barrel using a method that doesn't involve much special/expensive tooling, please tell me how you did it!

    Thanks in advance.

When I started building I installed my barrels using the all thread method. It works pretty well and doesn't require much in the way of tools. A hand drill, dremel(or file if you're a masochist), and some wrenches.

It's not ideal, but it works.

If it's a 7.62 AK, the allthread method works fine. You'll have Popeye forearms by the time you're done. Don't use the Home Depot zinc-plated stuff, splurge on some good grade-8 and wrap the threads with tape to protect the bore. Use copper or brass washers at the muzzle... pennies work well.

Have a plan to drive the barrel back out if you're headspacing a virgin barrel.

I built a jig with two lengths of allthread and some scrap 1/4" steel. It works on both AKM and AK74 barrels. I'll post up some pix if anyone is interested.

It is a 7.62 AK, and it's a new US made barrel.

Do you guys have a link to how to do the allthread method?

        Thanks

Use an ACME screw and nut if you can find it. It'll be much easier to turn. You can use a gear puller to pop the barrel from the trunnion after you headspace and drill the barrel pin.
