There is more then the factory way to do it.
But what you don't seem to understand is that 99% of shooters will not attempt to adjust their ammo. You assume that is just a normal practice.
A lot of shooters don't even know what caliber they own and either have to write down what it is when they go to the local gun store or take a box with them.

I agree that you can build ammo to fit your gun but what happens with the first shot, first batch of ammo
Go to a gun store and ask a dozen people about fire forming, bet you half don't know what your talking about and the half that do don't know exactly how to do it.
I'll put it in term more relatable to you.
We are saying take your car or buy their hot tools to rebuild the transmission.
You assume that not only does everyone have good machanical skills and feel but also that their machanical skills are good enough to compensate for poor set up.
Then the fact that you just can't see the body tapper nothing out before the shoulder tell me you have a poor grasp of the mechanics involved.
There are onl two instances where I will say tape is ok as long as proper technique is used. And that is on rimmed and belted rounds. As those headspace of the rim or belt and completely discount the body and shoulder tapper.

Valley82, I rarely go cowboy on my work. I much preferred working at a dealer than at an independent; the dealer had all those special tools (automotive headspace gauges), best manuals and wiring diagrams, and a parts department 50 feet away. Didn't have any of those advantages at an independent, had a Motor or Mitchell manual that kind of gave you an idea how to diagnose or R&R something. Wiring diagram in black and white on one page versus 15 pages in color on just one model at the dealer. No special tools, so we had our workarounds.

I would have loved to have the special factory pulling tools to get something apart, but we managed with what we had. Kind of like being on the frontier and making do with what you have. So not buying $700+ in gauges that I'd use once, makes no sense when I have a safe workaround. I think I'm more likely to get a crummy batch of ammo, than not measuring the gun to a close enough tolerance.

KC, I'm well aware 90%+ of gun peeps won't know about manipulating brass sizing in a press or fire forming. I'm not doing that, I just shoot a factory or one of my reloads, and just want it work with no drama.

I'm getting a vibe that you are mainly afraid of clueless peeps trying the tape without really knowing what's involved. So you do your best to discourage it.

You keep talking about the cost of gauges, but leave out the fact that you can go to someone who has them.
I charge $10 to headspace check a gun and I have all 3 gauges for most common cartridges...
